Triple P: Positive Parenting Program

Triple P...
Positive Parenting Program

What does Triple P do?

Triple P:
Stepping Stone,
Primary Care, and Discussion Group

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program offers support for parents caring for children ages 0-12 years old. Some parents are just seeking brief advice on how to handle minor disobedience, or on surviving toilet training. Others may need more support as they learn positive ways to deal with their child's sever or aggressive behaviors.

Triple P is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization, and it is currently used in more than 20 countries and 27 US states.

While Triple P is a parenting program, it does not tell parents how to be a parent. Instead, it is a toolbox of ideas. Parents can choose the strategy they feel may work best for them and choose the way they want to use them. It is all about making Triple P work for the parent.

The three Ps stand for Positive Parenting Program, which means making family life more enjoyable for those who chooses to use its methods. Triple P helps parents to:

  • Raise happy, confident kids.

  • Manage misbehavior so everyone in the family enjoys life

  • Set rules and routines that everyone respect and follows

  • Encourage positive behaviors

  • take care of the parent

  • Feel confident they are doing the right thing

Five Principles of Positive Parenting

  1. Create a safe, interesting environment

  2. Have a positive learning environment

  3. Use assertive discipline

  4. Have realistic expectations

  5. Take care of yourself as the parent

Who can benefit?

  • Parents or caregivers of a child ages 0-12 with developmental and intellectual delays, or special health care needs.

  • Parents or caregivers with a specific concern about their child's behavior.

  • Parents or caregivers who prefer one-to-one consultations.

  • Parents or caregivers who have children with mild to moderate behavior problems who could benefit from a parenting program.

Trusted Parents’ staff are trained and accredited in three levels of Triple P. We currently assist parents in Stepping Stone, Primary Care, and Discussion Group which are all based on Triple P's positive parenting strategies:

Stepping Stones is a 6 week one-on-one program that addresses the needs of families who have children with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities or special healthcare needs. This program helps parents to develop effective management strategies for dealing with a variety of childhood behavioral problems and development issues.

Primary Care is a one-on-one format that assist parents in developing a plan to manage their child's behavior issues and skill development concerns in children without special healthcare needs. It requires 3-4 one-on-one sessions.

Discussion Group brings together a group of 10–12 parents, providing them with developmental and child management advice on a specific problem behavior. Each two-hour discussion group can be taken as a stand-alone session or as part of a series.

There is a fee associated to this service, as there is a trained and accredited practitioner delivering the program; however, Triple P also offer classes for parents of children and teens at no cost online. Online classes cover a range of topics including encouraging good behavior, tackling disobedience, dealing calmly with conflict, and building stronger relationships.
